- From Tallinn: Riga is about 310 km (4–4.5 h), Vilnius about 600 km (7–8 h) and Warsaw about 950 km (11–13 h of driving).
- A one-hour flight to Riga still takes around four hours door to door — about the same as driving.
- Buses are cheapest for one or two people, but run on a fixed timetable from station to station.
- A transfer is priced per vehicle, so the cost per person falls as the group grows — and you travel door to door, with stops on request.
Short answer: on long routes the price of a private transfer is shared by everyone in the vehicle, the trip runs door to door on your schedule, and you skip airports and bus stations. That is why Tallinn–Riga, Tallinn–Vilnius and even Tallinn–Warsaw by private transfer often work out better than people expect.
Distances and driving times from Tallinn
| Destination | Distance (approx.) | Driving time (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pärnu, Estonia | 130 km | 1 h 45 min | Natural stop on the way to Riga |
| Tartu, Estonia | 185 km | 2 h 20 min | University city, Estonia's second largest |
| Riga, Latvia | 310 km | 4–4.5 h | Via Baltica (E67) |
| Vilnius, Lithuania | 600 km | 7–8 h | Via Riga and Panevėžys |
| Warsaw, Poland | 950 km | 11–13 h | Usually split with an overnight stop |
| Helsinki, Finland | 80 km by sea | About 2 h ferry | The vehicle travels with you on the ferry |
Driving times exclude long stops and depend on traffic, season and road works.
Door to door: transfer vs plane vs bus
Flying Tallinn–Riga
The flight itself takes about an hour. But add the trip to the airport, arriving early for security, boarding, collecting luggage and getting from Riga airport into the city — and the door-to-door time is often around four hours. That is roughly the same as driving, with more stress and less flexibility.
Taking the bus
Express coaches between Tallinn and Riga take around 4–4.5 hours, and a ticket typically costs about €16–27 per person with dynamic pricing. For one or two travellers with light luggage that is hard to beat. But the bus runs on its timetable, from station to station — you still need to get to the bus station and from the arrival station to your address, often with suitcases.
Private transfer
You leave when you want, from your door, and arrive at the exact address — the hotel, the office or the event venue. Luggage goes in the boot once. And you can stop wherever you like.
Why the cost per person drops as the group grows
A bus or plane ticket is per seat: ten people pay ten tickets. A transfer is per vehicle: the same fixed price is shared by everyone inside.
| Passengers | Vehicle | Tallinn–Riga, per vehicle | Each person pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Skoda Octavia | €270 | €68–270 |
| 5–6 | Mercedes-Benz V-Class | €365 | €61–73 |
| 7–8 | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (8) | €450 | €56–64 |
| 9–23 | Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (23) | €750 | €33–83 |
| 24–55 | Touring coach | On request | Lowest per person |
Add what you save — taxis to and from stations, hotel nights avoided thanks to a flexible schedule, working time on the road — and long-distance transfers become a sensible choice for families, teams and groups.
What you get on the road that a ticket cannot give
- Stops on request. Lunch by the beach in Pärnu, or a visit to Rundāle Palace near Bauska on the way from Riga to Vilnius.
- Your schedule. Leave at 6:00 or at 14:00 — not when the timetable says.
- Room for everything. Suitcases, sports equipment, prams, presentation materials.
- Time to work or rest. Read more in Business trip on wheels.
Planning a really long trip
- Driver rest is part of the plan. For minibuses and coaches, EU rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) limit daily driving to 9 hours and require a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours. On routes like Tallinn–Warsaw that means an overnight stop or a second driver.
- Carry your documents. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland are in the Schengen area, but temporary checks at internal borders do happen — bring a valid passport or ID card.
- Tell us about stops in advance so we can include them in the fixed price.
